Michael “Tony” Chavez, age 52, was born and raised in Jerome and Clarkdale, and the Verde Valley area. My joys are the outdoors, fishing, hunting, working with my hands and my gourd art.
I spent the past 40 years working in various fields of construction and working with my hands. From this I suffered severe knee problems and three surgeries. That left me with a lot of time on my hands and much frustration.
My mother, an accomplished artist, acted on this by helping me to find an outlet. With a book, a gourd, and a wood burning tool in her hands, she came to me and said, “Maybe you could do something with these.”
With that act, my art was born.
